Flashing a Metal Roof to a Wall

April 12, 2023by Joe0

Metal roofing is becoming increasingly popular among homeowners due to its durability and longevity. However, for a metal roof to function properly, it must be properly installed and flashed. Flashing is the process of sealing the joints between two different surfaces to prevent water from entering the building. In this blog, we will discuss the steps involved in flashing a metal roof to a wall.

Step 1: Gather the Necessary Tools and Materials

Before starting the flashing process, you will need to gather the necessary tools and materials. Here is a list of items that you will need:

  • Ladder
  • Tape measure
  • Metal snips
  • Tin roof flashing
  • Silicone caulk
  • Roofing screws
  • Screwdriver
  • Metal roofing panels

Step 2: Measure the Area

Measure the area where the flashing is needed. Be sure to measure the length and width of the wall where the metal roofing will be installed. This will give you an idea of how much tin roof flashing you will need. Remember, it’s always better to have too much material than not enough.

Step 3: Install the Metal Roofing Panels

Before installing the flashing, you will need to install the metal roofing panels. This involves laying the panels from the eave to the ridge of the roof, overlapping each panel as you go. Once the panels are in place, secure them with roofing screws. Make sure to install the screws in the ridges of the metal panels to prevent water from leaking through the screw holes.

Step 4: Install the Tin Roof Flashing

Now that the metal roofing panels are in place, it’s time to install the tin roof flashing. Begin by cutting the tin roof flashing to the length needed for the wall. Use metal snips to cut the flashing to the correct length. Once you have the correct length, you will need to bend the flashing at a 90-degree angle. This will allow the flashing to lay flat against the wall.

Step 5: Apply Silicone Caulk

Before installing the flashing, apply silicone caulk to the top edge of the flashing. This will create a waterproof seal between the flashing and the metal roofing panels. Apply the silicone caulk evenly along the top edge of the flashing, making sure to cover the entire area.

Step 6: Install the Flashing

With the silicone caulk in place, it’s time to install the flashing. Place the flashing against the wall, making sure it is in the correct position. The bottom edge of the flashing should be slightly above the metal roofing panels to allow for proper water drainage. Once the flashing is in place, secure it with roofing screws. Make sure to install the screws through the metal roofing panels and into the wall studs.

Step 7: Seal the Joints

To ensure that the flashing is watertight, seal the joints with silicone caulk. Apply a generous amount of silicone caulk to the joints between the flashing and the metal roofing panels. Use a caulk gun to apply the caulk evenly along the joints. Smooth out the caulk with a caulk smoothing tool to create a clean, finished look.

Step 8: Inspect the Flashing

Once the flashing is installed and sealed, inspect the area to make sure there are no gaps or openings. Check for any areas where water could potentially enter the building. If you find any gaps or openings, seal them with additional silicone caulk.

Step 9: Repeat the Process

If you have more than one wall where metal roofing will be installed, repeat the process for each wall. Be sure to measure each wall separately and cut the flashing to the correct length.

Conclusion

Flashing a metal roof to a wall is an important part of the installation process. It ensures that water cannot enter the building and cause damage to the structure
